Abstract

The prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) has been escalating alarmingly. The onus lies upon certain factors which have been identified correctly for the last few years. Dyslypidemia is one of the major modifiable risk factors for CAD. Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG) or Percutanious Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA) is the only remedy recommended by allopathic medicine practitioners for such patients. A study was carried out during the period of 2008–2009 to determine if above conditions could be treated using herbal medicine. A research sample was drawn out of the patients who visited BMARI clinics with coronary atherosclerosis. Study sample consisted of patients between age group 20–70 of both male and female. Initially, selected patients had been requested to perform stress test (treadmill test), echo cardiogram, lipid profile, liver function & kidney function test. Then the research sample was narrowed down by selecting patients found to be positive in stress test and diagnosis with triple vessel disease and double vessel disease and subsequently are referred for bypass surgery or angioplasty. Poly-herbal formulation consist of herbal decoction, herbal powder and sesame oil was introduced to the above patients with a daily dosage for a period of one year. The product is in liquid phase and recommended dosage is 20ml daily for one year. The patient group shows significant increase after the treatment (Mean, 0.6850) compared to the same group of patients before starting of the medication (mean 0.3725) (*p<0.01). Heavy metals, anti oxidative activity and cytotoxic activity were also tested.
