Abstract

This book is very comprehensive and up to date. Its enormous size (1,092 large pages) may frighten the reader, but 20% to 25% of those pages are devoted to bibliography. This book is of value to pediatricians because Professor Andrea Prader (a leading pediatric endocrinologist, pediatrician, and teacher) and colleagues cover the pediatric aspects of each endocrine disorder. In addition, Professor Prader covers the endocrine aspects of growth and development in chapter 19 and of sexual differentiation in chapter 12. The book is divided into 20 chapters. The shorter ones are devoted to such subjects as tissue hormones, ectopic hormone formation, thymus, pluriglandular syndromes, and hormone therapy of nonendocrine disorders. The short introductory chapter dealing with hormone biosynthesis, storage, transport, receptors, and mode of action is particularly good. The longer chapters cover each of the endocrine glands.
