Abstract

This is an easy to read introductory text defining and exploring clinical effectiveness and clinical governance. The text is clearly written and illustrated with uplifting cartoons and concise diagrams. It provides a useful framework that can be used to self-assess your skills and knowledge in evidence-based practice, as well as offering a wealth of useful resources and links to sources of information. There are chapters on exploring the literature, undertaking a literature search, and appraising and making conclusions. Useful examples of qualitative and quantitative evidence are included and appraised. The second section of the book defines clinical governance and advocates using this as a way in which to implement clinical effectiveness. Barriers to implementing best practice are described and templates for action plans are included for the reader, as well as some short ‘live’ success stories. This section is largely descriptive and perhaps does not address the complexity of implementing clinical effectiveness given that this is one of the most complex aspects of health service delivery. More detail on the processes of the success stories would have been helpful.
