Abstract
Child abuse is a leading cause of death and disability in children.1 For the purpose of this consensus conference summary, child abuse is defined as physical abuse, sexual abuse, or neglect. Although there are other forms of abuse—including emotional abuse and medical child abuse—that can have profound long-term adverse effects on children, these forms of maltreatment currently cannot be easily screened for or identified in an emergency department (ED) setting and thus are not part of our definition.
