Abstract

In initial nursing education, the advanced skills needed to perform a physical assessment, critically analyse the information gathered and make a clinical decision regarding the onward treatment of an acute minor illness are not routinely taught; however, these advanced skills are increasingly required by nurses working in primary care to meet the complex demands of the modern health service. The advanced skills of of nurses make them valuable members of the primary health-care team.
