Abstract
This chapter is a comprehensive reference manual providing information on the Clifton Assessment Procedures for the Elderly (CAPE), which is a combination of an objective, clinician-administered test of cognition and a clinician rating scale of behaviours. The CAPE consists of two scales: the Cognitive Assessment Scale and the Behaviour Rating Scale, which can be used separately or in combination. The CAPE continues to be widely used in clinical practice and was found to be one of the six most frequently used instruments with psychogeriatric patients in England and Northern Ireland. A brief history of the instrument's development is provided, along with a description of item content and administration/scoring procedures. Psychometric properties are reviewed and a critical commentary is provided. Key references are cited and in most cases the actual scale is included, giving the reader easy access to the instrument.
