Clean Development Mechanism

Abstract

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is one of the three flexible mechanisms established by the Kyoto Protocol. The negotiations of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) concluded in 1992. The general eligibility requirements for participation in CDM projects are that the host country is a Party to the Kyoto Protocol, It is participating voluntarily in the project activity and it has designated a national authority for the CDM. The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the supreme body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Its role is to oversee and review the implementation of the Convention at annual meetings and to negotiate new commitments. The UNFCCC and the Kyoto Protocol require Parties to make financial contributions to support climate change mitigation and adaptation activities.
