Abstract

Abstract The southern Australian species previously known as Rhabdonia globifera Lamx. ex. J. Agardh and Solieria mollis (Harv.) Kylin represent new genera of the family Acrotylaceae. Gigarlina ovata Lamouroux is an earlier name for R. globifera and is the type of Claviclonium ovatum (Lamx.) gen. et comb. nov., characterized by coarse terete axes beset with clavate, determinate branches. The genus is monocarpogonial, with supporting cells presumably acting as auxiliary cells and giving rise to gonimoblast filaments which penetrate a surrounding hull of sterile filaments and produce centripetal sporogenous filaments into the center of the hollow cystocarp. Rhabdonia nigrescens Harvey in Hooker & Harvey is an earlier name for S. mollis and is the type of Anlrocenlrum nigrescens (Harv.) gen. et comb. nov., characterized by fibrous holdfasts and irregularly branched narrow sub-terete axes.
