Abstract
In this work, we analize the rethorics of contemporary diagnostic on Latin-american societies in Manuel Ugarte’s essay, El porvenir de la America latina. Thus, we focus on its belonging to the evolutionary scientific paradigm, and the adoption of a racialist perspective on regards to the contemporany social aspects that the author intends to study. It is also possible to observe, in this rethorics, other aspects that are in tension with this paradigm, such as equality ideas, related to the author’s socialism. Those contradictions reveal the debates. from the end of XIXth century and XXth century, in wich the Latin-american space had to be conceived in reference to its modernization’s processes, as well as to the recent American hegemony, after the 1898 Spanish defeat against the USA.
