Abstract

A classical theory for electromagnetic-radiation absorption by a small metallic particle is developed. The ions are treated as an elastic jellium background and the electrons are treated hydrodynamically. Pronounced resonance structure is found in electric-dipole absorption but not in magnetic-dipole absorption. The electric-dipole absorption is found to be stronger than it was previously thought to be. The magnetic-dipole absorption was found to be significantly altered by phonon effects.
