Abstract

That Copenhagen, a Scandinavian city almost 1 ,000 miles from Mediterranean, should boast one of world's finest collections of classical antiquities will come as a surprise to many. Perhaps even more confounding is that collection was assembled by a man who made his fortune selling beer. Today, museum that bears his name, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, continues to honor the brewer Carl Jacobsen (1842-1914), Dane whose collecting acumen, visual perspicuity, and civic spirit rivals American businessman collectors such as J. Pierpont Morgan or Henry Clay Frick. The recent reopening of Glyptotek after a closure of three years to renovate upper galleries and to create a new installation downstairs occasions this review.1
