Abstract
Abstract: Gia Soles, senior strategist on Google's Responsible Innovation team presented a lecture on artificial intelligence and its ethical principles in practice for an audience of marketing and advertising professors at Clark Atlanta University on September 22, 2023. Gia details AI principles that serve as an ethical charter for responsible AI development at Google. According to the seven principles, all AI programs should be socially beneficial, avoid unfair bias, ensure safety, be accountable to people, incorporate privacy design, uphold scientific excellence, and be made for use in accordance with these principles. Gia discusses the need to operationalize these principles within the organization, emphasizing the importance of continuous questioning and assessment throughout a product's lifecycle, ethics training, and the role of a central team in leading AI ethics reviews. She concludes with insights on AI governance and regulation, advocating for a proportionate, risk-based framework, flexibility in application, process-focused legislation, and transparency to build user trust and accountability. Sole's presentation not only details Google's readiness for emerging AI regulations but also underscores its commitment to leading the way in responsible AI development.
