Abstract

Civil society groups in Nigeria played an invaluable role in the struggle that led to the restoration of civil rule in May 1999. However, following a brief lull that characterized their activities in the immediate period after the inauguration of the fourth republic, some scholars began to question the relevance of civil society in the post-dictatorship era. This paper, adopting the archival and content analysis (of documented intervention effort of civil groups) methods of investigation, observes that ratter than receding into permanent lethargy, CSOi have involve. themselves in the promotion of accountability in governance, since Nigeria’s democratic rebirth- The paper documents these efforts and the challenges facing CSOs in their bid to reform governance process in Nigeria- The paper concludes with some proposals on how the accountability works of civil society can be enhanced’
