Abstract
There has been an upsurge of interest in citizenship education, not only in Europe, but indeed globally (Green, 1997). The first part of this chapter explores the different conceptions of citizenship and citizenship education in France and England, in particular focusing on the issue of diversity in a multicultural context. Findings from fieldwork carried out in France suggest that the aims of the programme do not seem to correspond to the concerns of immigrant-origin pupils in a stigmatized social and school environment.KeywordsSocial CohesionAdvisory GroupReligious DiversityCitizenship EducationCommunity CohesionThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
