Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the citation patterns of 579 randomly selected citations from 167 French and German monographs published in 1984 and to compare these findings with those of earlier studies of the humanities monographic and journal literatures. The citations are analyzed by type of source-monograph, journal article, manuscript, thesis-whether a primary or secondary source, by language, and by date of publication. Though the citation patterns of French and German monographs are similar in most important respects, a significantly larger proportion of French monographs omit all citations or include less complete citations than do the German, British, or American monographs previously studied. Manuscripts are not as frequently cited as in other studies of the humanities monographic literature.
