Abstract
Acute radiotherapy (RT)-induced enteritis, a common side effect during pelvic RT, is caused in part by inflammatory cytokine-mediated mucosal cell injury. We hypothesized that circulating levels of the inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-6 and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β would be increased during RT and that the degree of elevation would correlate with clinically evident RT enteritis and the volume of small bowel, colon, and rectum receiving RT.
