Abstract
The kinetics of dissolution in acid solution of glauconite samples submitted to thermal treatment at temperatures both above and below dehydroxylation has been studied. The thermal treatment enhances the rate of dissolution, and the activation energy decreases considerably as compared to that of a non-heated sample. From the representation of the kinetic phenomena in reduced co-ordinates, it was possible to determine the pattern of the attack. In the case of the non-heated samples and of those heated to above 650°C, the dissolution process takes place according to the dissolution pattern of bidimensional thin plates, whereas the samples heated at 450°C dissolve according to the pattern of a uniform (homothetic) attack. The study of the distribution of the cations between the octahedral and tetrahedral layers by means of infra-red spectroscopy confirms the localization of a fraction of the ferrous iron in the tetrahedral positions.
