Abstract

The gait characteristics of a horse with an osteochondral fracture of the third carpal bone of the right forelimb are described. Observation at the trot showed a moderate lameness, with the head nodding downward during the left diagonal (left front-right hind) stance phase. Radiographic examination revealed a comminuted fracture of the proximal dorsomedial margin of the third carpal bone. Cinematographic analysis showed that the lame right forelimb had a shorter stance phase duration and slower breakover than the left forelimb (p<0.01). For both diagonals the hind limb preceded the forelimb at impact and at lift off. Compared with the left diagonal, there was a greater temporal dissociation both at impact and lift off between the limbs of the right diagonal (p<0.05) and, consequently, a shorter period of overlap during the right than the left diagonal stance phase (p<0.01). Impact of the hoof with the ground was toe first on the lame right forelimb, flat footed on the left forelimb.
