This paper discusses how a CIM strategy can, and should, be developed and how the shop coordination system can be a key component in achieving that strategy. The discussion on CIM centers on the need for the business strategy to drive the manufacturing strategy and the manufacturing strategy to drive the CIM strategy. The discussion on the shop coordination system details how this system may be specified and designed to be a cornerstone of the CIM strategy and how this system can achieve specific goals of the business strategy. The shop coordination system is defined in relation to the CIM strategy.
