Abstract

We studied phenolic acid and flavonoid bioavailability after cranberry beverage consumption in healthy overweight humans. Men and women (30-70 y; n=78) with abdominal adiposity (BMI 27-35; waist:hip >0.8 (women) or >0.9 (men); waist:height 蠅0.5) consumed 15.2 oz placebo or high polyphenol cranberry extract beverage (CEB) daily for 8 wk in a randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial. Urine was collected 24 h prior to and 0-8 h after oral glucose challenge following a single dose (acute response) and 8 wk daily consumption (chronic response). Compared to placebo, CEB elevated (P<0.05) epicatechin, caffeic, p-coumaric, ferulic, sinapic and 4-OH-3-MeOH-phenylacetic acids 0-8 h following a single dose and after 8 wk intervention; quercetin and 3,4-OH-phenylacetic acid were elevated (P<0.05) after 8 wk intervention. Concentrations of 6 anthocyanins (galactosides, glucosides, arabinosides of cyanidin and peonidin) were elevated (P<0.05) 0-8 h following a single dose and 8 wk CEB intervention compared to baseline levels. CEB consumption for 8 wk increased (P<0.05) proanthocyanidin A2 in 24 h samples compared to placebo; epicatechin, gentisic, caffeic, p-coumaric, ferulic, sinapic, 4-OH-3-MeOH-phenylacetic and 3,4-OH-phenylacetic acids were also elevated (P<0.05) in 24 h samples compared to baseline. Cranberry phenolic acids and flavonoids are bioavailable in healthy overweight humans. Supported by Ocean Spray Cranberries Inc and USDA.
