Abstract

Abstract A karyotypic analysis of the polychaete Ophryotrocha diadema has been carried out for the first time, using conventional Giemsa staining and G-banding techniques. The diploid chromosome numbers was 8 (2n = 8) and the total number of chromosome arms 16 (AN = 16), with all chromosomes being relatively large and metacentric, The fourth pair ofchromosomes was a marker pair, readily identifiable by a clear gap located close to the centromere. Analysis of G-banding patterns revealed dark bands in the metacentric region of all 4 chromosome pairs, with further thin banding on the chromosome arms.
