Abstract
The results obtained from the analysis of Giemsa-stained mitotic chromosome plates of P. speciosum are the first data on the karyology of Tetraphyllidea. The karyotype consists of eight pairs (2 n = 16) of chromosomes ranging from 1.62 to 7.47 μm long. The first large pair of homologues contributes 26.61% to the total chromosome length and is of intermediate meta-submetacentric structure. Chromosomes 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 are clearly acrocentric. The homologues of the fourth pair possess an intermediate submeta-subtelocentric structure. The prevailing acrocentric elements in the chromosome set indicate the rather primitive karyotypic state of P. speciosum
