Abstract
Chromosome numbers were determined for 13 species of hackberry psyllids including Tetragonocephala flava Crawford and 12 species of Pachypsylla . T. flava and 10 of the species of Pachypsylla , including the 9 species of leaf-blade gallmakers studied ( P. celtidisasterisca Riley, P. celtidispubescens Riley, P. celtidismamma (Riley), P. celtidisvesicula Riley, and five undescribed or undetermined species) and the bark gallmarker, P. celtidisinteneris Mally, were found to have an XO type of sex determination with 2N chromosome complements of 25 in the males. The petiole gallmaker, P. venusta (Osten-Sacken) also was found to have an XO type of sex determination but to have a male 2N chromosome number of only 23. On the other hand the bud gallmaker, P. celtidisgethma Riley, has an XY type of sex determination with a 2N chromosome number of 22 in the male. In all species the X chromosome divided during the second meiotic division.
