Abstract

SUMMARYSites of 5S rRNA in metaphase chromosomes of a Vicia narbonetisis karyotype have been located by in situ hybridization. One chromosome pair exclusively bears the 5S rRNA gene sites. Statistical comparisons of chromosomal length values have given evidence that this 5S rRNA chromosome pair is the second in length in the complement. The genes are clustered each at one chromosomal site which is located on the short arm, distal from the centromere. The amount of 5S rRNA genes was compared with the one in Vicia faba by comparing the numbers of autoradiographic silver grains. The Vicia narbonensis karyotype investigated comprises about the same amount of 5S rRNA genes as the normal Vicia faba karyotype.
