Abstract

Inhibition of DNA synthesis by mitomycin C at leptonema and zygonema has been observed to prevent formation of SC. As a result of this, at pachynema lampbrushlike organisation of single 250 Å, chromatin strands have been cytologically disclosed. Presence of cycloheximide at leptonena and zygonema has not interfered with the formation of SC. But at diplonema, chromatin strands of 250 Å in dimension have been seen to organise into back-and-forth folding of single fibre fashion. Lampbrush type of organisation at synapsis and back-and-forth folding of single fibres after pairing have been thought to be the basic pattern of chromatin organisation of the meiotic chromosomes.
