Abstract
For people who are unable to use the stairs, various types of stairlift are available for installation in private houses or public buildings. Installing a stairlift is often a cheaper solution than altering the house or moving. Stairlifts can be used by ambulant disabled people and wheelchair users, either independently or with assistance. They can be installed on existing staircases, with little structural work, and can be removed when no longer required. They can be designed to fit almost any staircase, and some are suitable for use on outside stairways. A stairlift needs to be chosen with care to suit the user's needs and it needs to fit appropriately to the stairs on which it will be installed. Full consideration must be made for the user's comfort and safety, the ease of use, the total costs, and the quality of servicing arrangements on offer. The availability of assistance from social services and the possibility of obtaining a grant to help with the cost should be fully investigated before going ahead with installing a stairlift.
