Abstract

With the increasing reports on algal blooms in the Philippines, we aimed to characterize chlorophyll-a pigment of C. reinhardtii using a portable LED fluorescence lidar system. C. reinhardtii was prepared using BG-culture media with controlled cultivation parameters. Chlorophyll-a pigment measurements were conducted using optical density and EEM chlorophyll-a pigment at 680 nm emission wavelength. The developed portable LED fluorescence lidar system uses 385 nm excitation wavelength for its transmitting system with pulse width of 10.92 ns and peak power of 830 mW. Positive correlations were observed between the range-resolved fluorescence lidar signal and other standard parameters. This new technique can provide real time monitoring of chlorophyll-a in algal growth, which can be used by government and private sectors in creating policies for environmental monitoring and management.
