Abstract
Chloride ion and nitrate ion selective electrodes (ISEs) were prepared by using 12-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid (12-HOA) as the membrane matrix, trioctylmethyl ammonium salts (chloride or nitrate) as the ion-sensing material and nitrophenyl octyl ether as the solvent mediator. A linear log αCI--potential curve was obtained within the chloride ion activity range from 10-4 to 10-1mol dm-3; the slope was 52 mV decade-1 when the ISE membrane was composed of 4.1 w/w% of 12-HOA and 41 w/w% of chloride ion-sensing material. A linear log αNO3--potential curve was obtained within the nitrate ion activity range from 3 × 10 -5 to 10-3 mol dm -3; the slope was 53 mV decade-1 when the ISE membrane was composed of 4.1 w/w% of 12-OHA and 42 w/w% of nitrate ion-sensing material. The ISEs exhibited a constant potential within the pH range from 3.5 to 9.5. The selectivity coefficients of the ISEs for several anions were measured.
