Abstract

Abstract A seven year old nursery plot of Penncross bentgrass was selected for the test. The thatch layer varied from a thickness of 1/4 inch to 3/4 inch. At time of treatment the chinch bug injury was moderate to severe. Due to the limited size of the nursery plot, treatment plots were 5 x 5 ft. They were arranged in a randomized complete block design with 4 replicates. Treatment precounts were made on Sept 14’78 when chinch bug counts averaged 21 nymphs and adults/4,5 inch plug and sod webworm averaged 1.2/4.5 inch plug sample. Granular treatment were applied by hand shaker can in two directions across the plot. The liquid treatments were applied in one gallon of water distributed in two directions with a hand sprinkling can. All treatments were watered into the thatch with a light hose watering. Post counts were made on Sept 21’78 by removing 4 randomly selected 4.5 inch dia. x 5 inch deep plugs within each plot. Each plug was shredded by hand and the number of webworms and chinch bugs recorded.
