Abstract

Play must be valued in its own right, as a rich tapestry of childhood expression. Through children's play, we can explore the interface of their cognitions and their emotions. Borrowing the “lens” of Piaget, Freud, Erikson, White, and contemporary scholars allows us to better understand the interface of cognition and emotion in children's play. This understanding can add precision to developmental theory and effectiveness to curriculum and intervention.
