Abstract

There is a growing disconnect between children and the natural world, described by award-winning and best-selling author Richard Louv as "nature-deficit disorder." Co-founder with Louv of the Children and Nature Network (www.childrenandnature.org), Dr. Charles describes this disconnect and offers suggestions for addressing it. While stressing the importance of reconnecting children with nature, for their health and well-being, she suggests that the remedies involve caring for communities and designing for life. All of this commentary has implications for museums, and she offers specific suggestions for actions that museums can take to help address nature-deficit disorder.
