Abstract
Ensuring the rights of children is a necessary strategy to achieve their optimal health and well-being. In one comprehensive document, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child defines the prerequisites for children's health, and the obligations of parents, communities, and governments to meet their needs by fulfilling their rights. Implementation of a rights-based approach to the core functions of public health and child health practice that uses the framework of children's rights contained in the Convention would herald a fundamental change in the status of children throughout the world and help ensure their optimal health and development.
