Abstract

Immunotherapy for allergies to dander from animals such as dogs, horses or rodents has been used for years but needs to be considered in context of evidence based medicine. In fact, animal dander allergenic extracts are not yet sufficiently standardized, treatment protocols have not been validated, and there are still too few clinical trials with adequate controls. Lacking rigor, the indications for immunotherapy are still limited and debatable. Nevertheless, when previous therapy has not been successful, the possibility of initiating immunotherapy should be considered, particularly in cases of occupational allergy. To date, the best management of most cases of allergies to animal dander remains avoidance of contact.
