Abstract

New Labour's current low standing in opinion polls is not to be explained solely by reference to deficiencies in Gordon Brown's leadership style, or by the visibility of party divisions. It is better understood as the consequence of weaknesses in the entire New Labour project, weaknesses thrown into sharp relief by the 2008–2009 financial crisis. The restoration of the Labour party's electoral fortunes requires that those weaknesses should be recognized and addressed.
