Abstract

The chemistry of ions corresponding to ≤40 amu inside the ionopause of comet Halley is studied using the Analytical Yield Spectrum approach and coupled continuity equations for the steady state condition. Six hundred reactions including the chemistry of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and sulphur compounds are taken in this calculation. The ionization of these compounds due to the impact of solar extreme ultraviolet photon, photoelectron and auroral electron of solar wind origin have been studied. The effects of these ionization sources on the density of ions are discussed. The results are compared with the measurements made by High Intensity Spectrometer (HIS) onboard Giotto spacecraft.
