Abstract

Reaction of various trimethyl(porphyrinylmethyl) ammonium iodides (generated in situ from the corresponding meso-dimethylaminomethylporphyrins and iodomethane) with triphenylphosphine afforded triphenylporphyrinylmethylphosphonium iodides which, when subjected to mild basic hydrolysis, gave meso-methylporphyrins in high yields.
