Abstract

Abstract The spectra of n-butylamine adsorbed on silica, magnesia, titania and alumina show molecular adsorption of this molecule. As a consequence of these interactions some specific perturbations are observed on the vibrational spectrum. The most significant are the increase in the intensities and the lowering of frequencies of the NH stretching and deformation bands, as well as a strong upward shift of the NH 2 wagging mode. The ν CH modes are also slightly shifted down. The extent of all these perturbations parallels the strength of the electron-withdrawing centres. When acidic protons are available, as on phosphated samples, the cation is formed and its spectrum is easily distinguishable from that of the molecular adsorbed species. On undoped alumina slight amounts of the ammonium cation are also observed, together with the molecular species, indicating the presence of proton donor centres.
