Abstract

The influence of the choice of catalyst and the presence of additives on the selectivity of the hydrogenation of D-xylo-5-hexulosonic acid was investigated. Optimal amounts of idonic acid were obtained with palladium boride as the catalyst in aqueous solution at pH 9, 80 °C and 100 kg/cm2 H2. Under these conditions, the conversion is 100% and the molar ratio of idonic and gluconic acid in the reaction product is 3/1, whereas almost no side products (<5%) were formed.
