Abstract

During the complete shutdown of Lok On Pai Desalter in 1978, three out of the six brine heaters were found fouled with calcium sulphate anhydrite. Chemical methods using sodium glycollate, EDTA and sodium carbonate solution/dilute inhibited hydrochloric acid have been tested in the laboratory to dissolve the scale. Their respective efficiencies as descalants, their relative costs and their corrosivity to the brine heater copper alloys were compared. Alternate reaction with sodium carbonate solution and inhibited hydrochloric acid was chosen for in - plant descaling process. The experience of such operation was summarized. This method had been found successful in removing most of the scale after three cycles of chemical cleaning.
