Abstract

As the chemical industry strives to restore its image and build credibility in the eyes of the public, companies have come to realize that they no longer can afford to surrender responsibility for their products at the close of a sales transaction. Communities around chemical plants, regulators, and environmental groups continue to raise questions about how chemical products impact human health and safety and the environment. As a result, chemical makers are taking on a broader role in the marketplace as responsible stewards of their products. Additional motivation to accept this weighty charge comes from the Chemical Manufacturers Association's (CMA) Responsible Care initiative. As a condition of membership in CMA, the 185 U.S. chemical-producing companies in the association pledge to support a continuing effort to improve the industry's responsible management of chemicals.
