Abstract

ABSTRACT The chemical properties of elliptical galaxies and the bulges of spiral galaxies are reviewed. The mass-metallicity relation for ellipticals appears to span the full range of these galaxies from dwarf spheroidal to gE. Explanations seem possible in terms of galaxy formation models with dissipation and mass loss, but other solutions such as variable yield are discussed. The properties of globular cluster systems and their "parent" galaxies are compared.
