Abstract
SEVERAL types of controlled droplet atomizers (CDA's) were compared to a conventional spray system which used pressure atomizers in applying a chemical conditioning treatment to alfalfa to determine if treatment effectiveness could be maintained or improved with the use of less water carrier. Air carrier CDA's normally provided more uniform coverage of the alfalfa than obtained with either pressure atomizers or vertical rotary disk atomizers. Alfalfa drying rates were similar following all spray systems with drying rate directly related to the spray rate of the 2.8% aqueous solution of potassium carbonate. Alfalfa drying rate was not affected by an increase in concentration of potassium carbonate or the addition of a surfactant in the chemical solution. Chemical conditioning with CD A equipment does not appear practical or economically justifiable.
