Abstract

The present work was performed to assess chemical composition and evaluate antibacterial activity of Lyngbya major Menegh. ex Gomont. It is a Cyanobacterial species of the class Cyanophyceae that produces several secondary metabolites. The species had been collected from a pond at Kamarkundu in Hooghly district, West Bengal, India. The result of qualitative tests of four solvent extracts showed that the algal species possessed alkaloid, tannin, steroid, glycoside, terpenoid, phenol, flavonoid, flavonol and phycocyanin phytochemicals. Whereas, antibacterial activity study revealed that benzene extract was most effective against the tested pathogenic bacterial strains perhaps due to over-accumulation of chemical compounds in that solvent extract. In the present study, higher inhibition zone (13.8 mm) was found in benzene extract against a Gram positive bacterium Micrococcus luteus.
