Abstract

1. 1. The chemical nature of the very thin reflecting platelets within the motile iridophores of the blue damselfish, Chrysiptera cyanea, was studied by thin-layer chromatography on crystalline cellulose. 2. 2. The platelets are composed exclusively of guanine, as judged by the limits of sensitivity of this method. 3. 3. By contrast, chromatograms of the platelets from carp iridophores revealed that hypoxanthine is present in addition to the main component, guanine. 4. 4. The purer composition of the damselfish crystals may be a prerequisite for mechanical toughness, since they must be subject to distorting forces during the motile response of the cell.
