Abstract

An updated checklist of blowflies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) of Indian subcontinent along with the role of some species in forensic, medical, and veterinary sciences is provided herewith. The present study is solely based on available literature related to the family. The family is represented by 9 subfamilies viz., Ameniinae, Bengaliinae, Calliphorinae, Chrysomyinae, Helicoboscinae, Luciliinae, Melanomyinae, Polleniinae and Rhiniinae, 32 genera and 134 species in India subcontinent. Amongst the 134 species, 17 species are known for their forensic, medical and veterinary importance; either playing important role in forensics or transmit different pathogens or cause myiasis in humans and other vertebrate species. The study may prove helpful to investigate different aspects of blowflies including taxonomic diversity and distribution along with their forensic, medical and veterinary importance in the subcontinent.
