Abstract
The issue of human trafficking did not come into much academic debate until after the 1980’s and many of the published documents on the subject have been mainly in the form of research reports (both published and unpublished). Up to 12.3 million people are trafficked annaully. It is against this backdrop that the issue of human trafficking has became a priority for contemporary (modern) policy makers in the fields of human rights, migration policy, health, gender and law enforcement. This study was conducted in Johannesburg as the city is considered as the hub of human trafficking activities, not only in the Gauteng province but also in South Africa as a whole. Emphasis was placed on young women (aged between 16-35 years) both foreign and local nationals who were particularly interested in participating in the survey on human trafficking and these respondents were identified from various South African deportee centres.
