Abstract

ABSTRACT Grounded theory has long been a significant method for conducting emergent qualitative research. However, its application in Indonesia, particularly in communication studies, started relatively late. This study reviews the growing use of grounded theory in Indonesian communication research through a bibliometric content analysis of 470 academic manuscripts authored by various Indonesian scholars. Although grounded theory has only recently gained traction in Indonesian academia, the findings reveal a notable increase in its use within communication studies. Nevertheless, two critical issues are identified: limited researcher diversity, marked by the dominance of contributions from higher education institutions and pervasive misconceptions regarding the fundamental assumptions of all three variants of grounded theory. Uncertainty about these foundational assumptions was frequently observed in the analyzed publications. The study’s findings aim to clarify how grounded theory has been utilized and provide recommendations for future researchers to adopt the method more effectively.
