Abstract

The article shows philanthropy as a sociocultural phenomenon. The author reveals the overall trends and regional characteristics of philanthropy as a result of business activities. Analysis of the information obtained allows us to conclude that the charity has become a significant social phenomenon in Russia. Since the end of the XVIII century other manifestations of charity occur in the form of patronage. Charity and philanthropy have always been traditional for the Russian business. Many merchants made donations for the construction of hospitals, schools, theaters, museums, churches and other institutions. This topic is still largely unknown. First of all, it is connected with the state of the source base. Today the urgent task of science is the search for, identify and analyze extant sources on this topic.
