Abstract

The nuclear charge distribution in the fission of 238U by 9·5 MeV and 11·3 MeV protons and 11·5 MeV deuterons has been studied from the yield of 12 shielded or quasi-shielded nuclides. Correlation with a Gaussian charge dispersion was investigated for various mass formulae, neutron distribution functions and charge distribution hypotheses. Both the proton and deuteron induced fission of 238U showed best correlation with the minimum potential energy postulate of charge distribution using a shell-effected mass equation and a saw tooth neutron distribution.
