Abstract

Heavy cosmic ions were studied by plastic detectors aboard COSMOS 690, 782, and 936 satellites flown between 1973 and 1977. The planar fluences of particles with LET 1000≧150 keV/μm in cellulose nitrate were 14.2 ± 0.6, 15.0 ± 0.6, and 14.7 ± 0.7 particles cm −2 on COSMOS 690, 782, and 936, respectively. The primary-charge distributions in the range of 30≦ Z≦40 is presented for cosmic-ray heavy ions with an energy E≧1 GeV/nucleon. The integral LET distributions obtained on these satellites are also presented. LET variation with depth inside the cellulose nitrate stack is obtained. The scheme of the COSMOS 936 experiment “BIOBLOC” is described and some results are presented.
